When the COUNCIL activ herbicide is applied, triafamone enters weeds through the roots and leaves and rapidly changes into a different form by reducing the keto group. In contrast to rice, weeds use a process known as N-demethylation to create a second material that potently inhibits the activity of acetolactate synthase (ALS).

For susceptible weeds, ethoxysulfuron is mostly absorbed through their leaves. It then moves within the plant and powerfully stops the action of acetolactate synthase (ALS). ALS is responsible for plant’s growth; when the action of ALS is stopped by triafamone and ethoxysulfuron, the weed plants are killed.
